This book is based on the diaries of some of the intrepid English gentry women who travelled around Wales between 1795 and 1860, initially by coach and carriage but latterly by train.
They came to explore the scenery, antiquities and exotic customs of a country that, at that time, felt very 'foreign', travelling on poor roads, marvelling at the landscape, climbing mountains by horseback and on foot, and staying in inns that ranged from 'pigsties' to 'paradise'.
