We must never forget the sacrifices people like Trevor Bowyer, DFC, ISMJ, a rear gunner in World War 2 Bombers made. Trevor’s story is told in truly riveting and highly readable style by well-known author Ken Ballantyne in the biography: Another Dawn Another Dusk.

Life for Trevor began as it had for most Shropshire youngsters. He was born in Atcham in January 1914 just before the start of World War 1. This was a true accident of birth. Mrs Bowyer (a good Shropshire name!) was visiting her sister in the village when she went into Labour. It was, mused Trevor, probably his parent’s three 3 mile walk from their home that helped induce his birth!

On leaving school Trevor worked for the Post Office. He might have stayed until retirement, but Hitler had other plans. At the outset of World War 2, Trevor volunteered for service in Bomber Command Aircrew. This was a tough job. Over 55,000 men and women of Bomber Command died, many of them his friends.

He lived through some hard times, never knowing if his next mission was to be his last. He survived his gun turret being shot to pieces, and being shot down over the North African Desert; Spending the next three nerve-tautening days evading capture and possible death at the hands of the enemy.

Another Dawn Another Dusk is an exceptionally good read, costing £9.99 and is available from good bookshops, locally. (ISBN 978-0-9550601-3-7) It’s also available via http://www.laundrycottagebooks.co.uk. It’s an ideal Christmas gift for lovers of biography and people interested in the history of World War 2.
