Lib Dems pick PPC for Wrekin seat
At a recent meeting, Wrekin & Telford Liberal Democrats approved councillor, David Murray, as their Wrekin candidate.
David moved to the West Midlands to work for GKN in 1986, and lives in the constituency. With a wealth of business experience in new product development, he is particularly concerned about the nationwide decline in manufacturing, and lack of investment in our future. The current situation is not helped by the bailed-out banks refusing loans to around half of commercial applicants.
Planning permission granted for £6 million Telford development
A proposal by Wrekin Housing Trust for the redevelopment of Dothill has approved by Telford & Wrekin Council.
The development of Dothill in Wellington will see the demolition of 90 flats, to be replaced with 59 new homes including two, three and four bedroom houses, three bedroom maisonettes and two bedroom flats. The flats are designed to be modern and contemporary. Parking will be fully catered for, located to be accessible to the homes. All the houses will feature gardens, residents in the flats will have ‘private’ communal garden spaces.
More doors, more scores
Over 50 premises have been added to Telford & Wrekin Council’s popular Scores on the Doors site at http://www.scoresonthedoors.org.uk/council/telford-and-wrekin-council this month.
In the latest update nearly 40 premises received three stars or more. Premises need over two stars to comply with the law.
Refurb for Wellington’s ‘oldest pub’
What is thought to be Wellington’s oldest trading pub, The White Lion in Crown Street, has been given a new lease of life, after being taken over by new management.
A spokesman for the White Lion said: “Although the inside of the pub was sound, it was in need of a make-over, so we decided to close down for several days, while a team of skilled tradesmen and women worked on the pub. And all praise to them, because in the time that was available to them, they did an absolutely first rate job.”
Free family celebration of St Georges Day
The St George’s Day celebration event is returning to Southwater Square in Telford next month and is shaping up to be bigger and bolder than last year with a chance to meet St George himself.
The event on Saturday, April 24, from 11am to 4pm will be themed around all things medieval and traditionally English with Morris Dancing, brass bands, dance and musical performances, falconry, themed arts and crafts and storytelling.
Factory Burgled, Alveley
Police in Bridgnorth are appealing for information after a factory was broken into and metal fixings stolen on a village industrial estate. The premises on Alveley Industrial Estate was burgled between about 7pm on Friday (FEB 26) and 9.45am on Sunday (FEB 28).
A large number of pallets containing metal ingots was stolen, along with a yellow Karcher pressure washer and a Stomp off-road motorbike.
The offender or offenders would have needed a relatively large vehicle or a car with a trailer to have transported the items away.
Makeover for Ironbridge continues
Work is now underway on major repairs to the surface of the Wharfage car park in Ironbridge as part of a makeover of the area in time for the new tourist season.
To date £15,000 has already been invested in a major declutter and refurbishment of the historic town which has seen redundant poles and signposts removed and street lights replaced.
British Legion, Newport, burglary
Newport, Shropshire, Police officers are investigating a burglary in the town. The incident occurred at the British Legion Club on Audley Avenue.
At some time between 11.45pm on Sunday 28th February and 9am on Monday 1st March, it appears thieves broke into the premises by forcing open a fire door that leads into the function room.
The bar area in the club is locked overnight which prevents access but the thieves knocked through a wall inside the building to access the back of a safe and remove it from the wall.
Burglary in Leegomery
Police officers in Telford are appealing for information following a burglary in Leegomery. The incident occurred at an address on Acacia Drive on Friday 26th February.
Sometime between 7.30pm and 9.15pm it appears that thieves broke into the property by smashing through the patio doors at the back of the house. The thieves then entered the property and carried out a thorough, untidy search - both upstairs and downstairs - before stealing a number of items and making their escape.
Police Warning Over Garden Sheds
Police are urging garden shed owners in Shropshire to maintain security to protect gardening equipment and other valuable items. The warning comes as gardeners prepare for the new season and are likely to be checking lawnmowers, power tools and other major equipment.
Several shed burglaries have already been reported around the county in recent weeks and police are anxious owners step up security wherever necessary.
Shropshire Division’s crime prevention manager, PC Tim Weaver has issued a series of tips under the catchphrase “Sheducate”.
