PostHeaderIcon Free family celebration of St Georges Day

The St George’s Day celebration event is returning to Southwater Square in Telford next month and is shaping up to be bigger and bolder than last year with a chance to meet St George himself.

The event on Saturday, April 24, from 11am to 4pm will be themed around all things medieval and traditionally English with Morris Dancing, brass bands, dance and musical performances, falconry, themed arts and crafts and storytelling.

PostHeaderIcon Telford Dance Festival set to return with a high-class line-up

Telford Dance Festival is returning to the borough for the second time next week, boasting a fantastic line-up of local and national dancers, both amateur and professional.

The festival is organised by Telford Culture Zone and Pablo Productions and starts on Tuesday with performances at 7.30 nightly until Friday at The Place @ Oakengates.

On Saturday there will be two performances of a professional piece for children, DanSense, at 2pm and 6pm.

PostHeaderIcon Sky’s the limit as DNA bid for TV dance glory

Telford and Wrekin area’s very own dance group DNA is bidding for glory on national television this weekend when it competes in the semi finals of Davina McCall’s Got To Dance show on Sky One.

The group is aiming to make the final of the talent show despite strong competition from five other acts.

PostHeaderIcon Eid and Diwali celebrations in Telford

Hadley Learning Community (HLC) will be hosting an Eid and Diwali celebration event next week for the second year running. The event on Thursday, 10 December from 3pm to 6pm and features a henna tattooist, Asian drum music and Bangra dance, a balloonist, food and jewellery stalls and other family activities.

It is being organised by HLC and Telford & Wrekin Community Health services.

This event is open to everyone and is aimed at promoting community cohesion among the people of different cultures and faiths.

PostHeaderIcon New Community Choir to meet for first time

Local singers are being urged to sign up to the new Telford and Wrekin Community Choir – which meets for the first time on November 25. The choir meets in the Dawley House Community Hall in Burton Street and is open to anyone aged 10 and over.

It is open to any singing ability and aims to be fun and light hearted with participants singing well known music.

The choir will be led by Paul Wilcox and Phaedra Brickwood and the cost is £1 per person. The first meeting will take place from 6.30-8pm.

PostHeaderIcon Ghostly dance show success

A community dance and storytelling project in Newport ahead of a Halloween performance of the Ghosts, Ghouls and Gargoyles show was a great success. The eight shows, on Saturday (October 31), were the culmination of four weeks of hard work between the cast of local residents of all ages and professional artists.

The shows at Adams Grammar School were managed by DanceXchange and funded by Telford & Wrekin Council’s Find Your Talent programme.

PostHeaderIcon Young people “approach midnight” with new film

Young people in Telford & Wrekin have developed their performance and media production skills by working with a digital arts company to produce an outstanding 20 minute film. The group of a dozen young people worked for three weeks with digital artists Fowler and Sumner to put together Approaching Midnight – which is due to be screened at a special premiere at Oakengates Theatre @ The Place.

The young people were coached in dance, singing, rapping, editing and film production, DJ skills and illustration during the intensive three week project at a Wellington venue.

PostHeaderIcon School hosts week of cultural events

A Telford primary school will be holding a special International Week called ‘Celebrating Diversity’ from Monday 5 October with a whole host of events designed to celebrate cultural diversity in the borough. Pupils from Queenswood Primary School, Ketley Bank will take part in an opening ceremony on Monday in the style of an Olympic parade through the streets of Ketley Bank.

The parade will depart from the School at 10:40am, and will return at 11am to light the symbolic ‘International Flame’.

A community dance project in Newport based on scary local tales and legends will culminate in a public performance to celebrate Halloween. Ghosts, Ghouls and Gargoyles has been set up as a partnership between Telford & Wrekin Council’s Find Your Talent programme and DanceXchange.

Local people of all ages and abilities are being encouraged to go along to recruitment sessions which are taking place at schools in Newport this weekend.

PostHeaderIcon Arts college success for youngsters

Eight young people have successfully completed the Arts Council’s bronze award as part of Shropshire Telford & Wrekin Youth Offending Service’s efforts to help them back into mainstream education, training or employment. The group took part in a summer arts college run as part of a joint scheme between the Youth Justice Board and Arts Council England.

The college provides a structured programme of arts-based activity during the summer holidays using Arts Enrichment resources including dance, drama, visual and music genres.
