Line Dancing Success for Shropshire Police Worker
A Shropshire police employee has yet to get her feet back on the ground after being crowned winning line dance choreographer at the World Dance Masters. Joyce Plaskett, Team Leader of the Witness Care Unit, only entered the competition, held in Manchester over the weekend, following pressure from fellow line dance instructors.
Over 1,000 dancers took part at the prestigious event, with 33 entries in the Line Dance Choreography section. Joyce entered two routines.
Get Set For CultureFest
A cast of hundreds of performers, from hip hop dancers to Viking hordes, are set to invade the centre of Telford for the borough’s biggest free event of the summer - CultureFest in Telford Town Park this Saturday, July 24.
The event, now in its third year, promises to be the biggest and best CultureFest yet, with the fun starting from 11am.
Among the names performing are winners of this year’s Telford’s Talent competition dance group High Definition who will kick off proceedings on the main stage, hosted by BBC Radio Shropshire’s Eric Smith.
Schools set to participate in local Olympics
Local school children from across the West Midlands will be taking part in the Olympics 2012 Inspire to Aim Higher event, hosted at the RAF Museum Cosford on Tuesday 25th May. This special event is a collaboration which aims to promote participation, inclusion and competition, whilst highlighting the values of the Olympic and Paralympic movement.
The day will commence with an opening ceremony including music supplied by the RAF Cosford band, a performance from the Idsall School dance group and an introduction to the day's activities.

Free family celebration of St Georges Day
The St George’s Day celebration event is returning to Southwater Square in Telford next month and is shaping up to be bigger and bolder than last year with a chance to meet St George himself.
The event on Saturday, April 24, from 11am to 4pm will be themed around all things medieval and traditionally English with Morris Dancing, brass bands, dance and musical performances, falconry, themed arts and crafts and storytelling.
Telford Dance Festival set to return with a high-class line-up
Telford Dance Festival is returning to the borough for the second time next week, boasting a fantastic line-up of local and national dancers, both amateur and professional.
The festival is organised by Telford Culture Zone and Pablo Productions and starts on Tuesday with performances at 7.30 nightly until Friday at The Place @ Oakengates.
On Saturday there will be two performances of a professional piece for children, DanSense, at 2pm and 6pm.
Sky’s the limit as DNA bid for TV dance glory
Telford and Wrekin area’s very own dance group DNA is bidding for glory on national television this weekend when it competes in the semi finals of Davina McCall’s Got To Dance show on Sky One.
The group is aiming to make the final of the talent show despite strong competition from five other acts.
Eid and Diwali celebrations in Telford
Hadley Learning Community (HLC) will be hosting an Eid and Diwali celebration event next week for the second year running. The event on Thursday, 10 December from 3pm to 6pm and features a henna tattooist, Asian drum music and Bangra dance, a balloonist, food and jewellery stalls and other family activities.
It is being organised by HLC and Telford & Wrekin Community Health services.
This event is open to everyone and is aimed at promoting community cohesion among the people of different cultures and faiths.
New Community Choir to meet for first time
Local singers are being urged to sign up to the new Telford and Wrekin Community Choir – which meets for the first time on November 25. The choir meets in the Dawley House Community Hall in Burton Street and is open to anyone aged 10 and over.
It is open to any singing ability and aims to be fun and light hearted with participants singing well known music.
The choir will be led by Paul Wilcox and Phaedra Brickwood and the cost is £1 per person. The first meeting will take place from 6.30-8pm.
Ghostly dance show success
A community dance and storytelling project in Newport ahead of a Halloween performance of the Ghosts, Ghouls and Gargoyles show was a great success. The eight shows, on Saturday (October 31), were the culmination of four weeks of hard work between the cast of local residents of all ages and professional artists.
The shows at Adams Grammar School were managed by DanceXchange and funded by Telford & Wrekin Council’s Find Your Talent programme.
