PC amazed by story
PC Angela Leech, who is based at Malinsgate Police Station, has spoken of her amazement after two generous members of the public came forward to offer money and belongings to a 44-year-old man who was the victim of a burglary in Brookside back in February.
Local celebrity marks 90th Birthday
Ted Cowling celebrated his 90 birthday recently with a special party for 100 guests at the Pheasant Inn, Admaston. Ted has lived a full and varied life. “Two years ago my late wife and I won the Most Romantic Couple in Britain award. And last year I was invited to attend a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace by the Queen.”
Shropshire-wide Purse Thefts Warning
Police across Shropshire today renewed warnings for people to be alert and keep a close eye on their valuables, especially purses and handbags, while shopping.
The advice comes after a number of purse thefts reported in various parts of the county in recent days, where purses were ‘dipped’ from bags.
Officers urged people to keep handbags securely fastened and to be aware of persons standing around or close to them at all times while out and about.
Local schools raise money to fight Polio
Two local primary school invited Wellington Rotary Club to visit them to tell the pupils about the current campaign to eradicate Polio. As a result, Rotarian Keith Mainwaring visited Wrekin View School, Wellington and Lilleshall School, recently. He explained the importance of eliminating Polio in the last four places where it still exists: India. Afghanistan, Pakistan and parts of Africa. Both schools have decided to raise money to support this worthy cause.
Housing on the Broseley and Barrow Local Joint Committee agenda
Local people are being invited to their next Broseley and Barrow Local Joint Committee next week (2 March 2010) to talk about the issues which affect them.
The meeting, to take place at 7pm at Birchmeadow Centre in Broseley, will allow council tenants to raise any questions or concerns they have directly with the council’s housing officers.
People will also be able to hear from and raise any issues with their local Police officers, hear about the latest grant applications for community money and ask any other questions they may have.
Fighting Polio from Wellington
Rotary clubs, worldwide, have worked since 1985 to eradicate Polio, making remarkable progress, as the disease is now found in only four countries: India, Afghanistan, Pakistan and parts of Africa.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation challenged Rotary to raise $355,000,000, to be matched by the foundation. So UK Rotary Clubs are working hard to raise money for this worthy cause.
PC Fund helps Brookside man
A Brookside man, devastated after his ground floor flat was burgled, has had some of his confidence in human nature restored following a donation from the Police Community (PC) Fund
The 44-year-old man lost most of his possessions including a 28inch TV, portable TV, freeview box, iron, ironing board, bedding, Hoover and a significant number of CDs and DVDs as a result of the burglary on Beaconsfield. The thieves even emptied his fridge and freezer.

A new drive to stop bogus charity collectors costing charities millions was launched this week, by Charities’ Minister Angela Smith.
Telford & Wrekin Council’s Trading Standards team are backing the campaign called ‘Give with Care’.
Over 600,000 leaflets are being delivered to households in areas where questionable collections have been identified as an issue.
Telford & Wrekin Council is displaying posters in buildings where they are most likely to be seen by the public. Organisations across the country are doing the same.

Food delivery man attacked in Wellington
Wellington Police officers are appealing for information following an assault in the town. The incident occurred on Pooler Close on Friday 5th February.
Sometime between 8.30pm and 9pm, as the victim, a 31-year-old man, delivered food to an address on Pooler Close, he was approached by two unknown men who grabbed him by the shoulders and pushed against a wall.
Budget proposals will help the most vulnerable
Telford & Wrekin Council has ambitious plans to invest over £8 million in support and care services for older people and vulnerable adults over the next three years.
This investment forms parts of the Council’s budget proposals for 2010/11, which are now being consulted on. The additional money, earmarked for spend in this priority area, will help in our commitment to enabling people to remain independent in their own homes, providing the right sort of care tailored to an individual’s needs and supporting our ageing population.
