New memorial is first to recognise sacrifice of Spiritualists

A service on 10th July 2010 will mark the dedication of Spiritualists' first ever memorial to members that have served in the UK Armed Forces. The imposing memorial, which features a tall granite obelisk, will be unveiled at the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas, Staffordshire.

PostHeaderIcon Memorial model to be on display at RAF Cosford

A scale model of the recently commissioned Bomber Command Memorial will be on display at the Royal Air Force Museum Cosford as part of the National Service (RAF) Association parade taking place on Sunday 4th July 2010.

The model will be on display in the Museum’s Hangar 1 and Project Coordinator David Forsyth, an MOD civilian who works in the RAF Directorate of Air Staff will be there to speak with veterans and visitors about the project and answer any questions they may have.

The Rifles Regiment will be in town on Saturday 29 May to receive the Freedom of the Borough from Telford & Wrekin Council.

Local residents and visitors can meet with the Rifles from 10:30am onwards in Telford Town Park where the Regiment will hold a display and arranging activities for people to take part in.

Telford & Wrekin residents, visitors to the borough and people from all over Shropshire and beyond will be able to meet the Rifles Regiment in Telford on Saturday, May 29 when Telford & Wrekin Council will be honouring the Regiment with the Freedom of the Borough.

A parade for inspection and the Freedom Ceremony will be held in Telford Town Park Arena and the Regiment will be staging a display of their vehicles around the area of the old Norman Chapel where visitors have the chance to meet with members of the Regiment.

PostHeaderIcon Council to honour the Rifles Regiment with the Freedom of the Borough

Telford & Wrekin Council is set to honour the Rifles Regiment with the Freedom of the Borough.

This will be the first time Telford & Wrekin has honoured a regiment with the tribute and it is the highest honour that the authority can bestow.

Last year the council took the decision to honour the Rifles and the ceremony will take place in The Arena at Telford Town Park on Saturday, May 29.

The Rifles Regiment is the largest infantry regiment in the British Army, consisting of five regular and two territorial battalions, plus a number of companies.

Shropshire Army Cadet force will be celebrating being part of the oldest Youth organisation in the United Kingdom. 2010 marks 150 years since the Cadet movement first started, when the Cadet Corps was formed to help bolster the country's defence numbers following heavy losses in the Crimean War.

PostHeaderIcon Hundreds brave cold to join lantern parade

Over 400 people braved the cold to join this year’s Lantern Parade event in Telford Town Park, organised by Telford & Wrekin Council. The parade featured about 220 lanterns which people made during the month of December at a variety of workshops held for community based groups such as youth clubs, brownies, groups for children and adults with disabilities.

Lanterns were also made at public sessions held at the town centre’s Meeting Point House and Madeley Library as well as in the town park on the afternoon of Monday’s event.

Children aged five to 11 can take advantage of a variety of free sessions at Libraries in the borough this December. On offer are warming stories, a Christmas lantern making working workshop and craft sessions. The first of the sessions, Snowy Saturday Stories, will be held from 11am to 12 noon at Wellington Library on Saturday, December 5.

PostHeaderIcon School hosts week of cultural events

A Telford primary school will be holding a special International Week called ‘Celebrating Diversity’ from Monday 5 October with a whole host of events designed to celebrate cultural diversity in the borough. Pupils from Queenswood Primary School, Ketley Bank will take part in an opening ceremony on Monday in the style of an Olympic parade through the streets of Ketley Bank.

The parade will depart from the School at 10:40am, and will return at 11am to light the symbolic ‘International Flame’.
