Lib Dems pick PPC for Wrekin seat
At a recent meeting, Wrekin & Telford Liberal Democrats approved councillor, David Murray, as their Wrekin candidate.
David moved to the West Midlands to work for GKN in 1986, and lives in the constituency. With a wealth of business experience in new product development, he is particularly concerned about the nationwide decline in manufacturing, and lack of investment in our future. The current situation is not helped by the bailed-out banks refusing loans to around half of commercial applicants.
Refurb for Wellington’s ‘oldest pub’
What is thought to be Wellington’s oldest trading pub, The White Lion in Crown Street, has been given a new lease of life, after being taken over by new management.
A spokesman for the White Lion said: “Although the inside of the pub was sound, it was in need of a make-over, so we decided to close down for several days, while a team of skilled tradesmen and women worked on the pub. And all praise to them, because in the time that was available to them, they did an absolutely first rate job.”
Local celebrity marks 90th Birthday
Ted Cowling celebrated his 90 birthday recently with a special party for 100 guests at the Pheasant Inn, Admaston. Ted has lived a full and varied life. “Two years ago my late wife and I won the Most Romantic Couple in Britain award. And last year I was invited to attend a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace by the Queen.”
Young bands get chance to support established act
Five young local bands who are part of Telford & Wrekin Council’s successful rock school project are gearing up to support experienced band Capture Kendal later this month.
The gig takes place on February 24 at Oakengates Theatre @ The Place and gives an opportunity for bands from local schools and colleges to experience working alongside an excellent three piece band.
They ‘laughed their pants off!’
With one of the toughest winters for years, Belly laughs were a rare commodity, especially on a recent cold February night but Horsehay Amateur Dramatic Society managed to pull it off, along with our pants, metaphorically speaking, by providing a rib-tickler farce with their production of Mike Harding’s – ‘Fur Coat and No Knickers’.
"It wasn't me!" says MP
Telford MP David Wright has been caught up in an argument about rude remarks made about Conservatives on his Twitter account.
Mr Wright says he believes the account was hacked, but some experts believe that Twitter accounts cannot be hacked in that way.
Mr Eric Pickles MP, chairman of the Conservative Party has asked Mr Wright for a formal apology.
Telford & Wrekin Music Under 18s Band Night
Five local young bands who are part of the successful Telford and Wrekin Music's Rock Schools are gearing up to support the very experienced “Capture Kendal” on Wednesday February 24th at The Place Oakengates. The gig will give an opportunity for bands from local schools and colleges to play on the same stage and experience working alongside this excellent three piece band.
By-election results for Telford & Wrekin and Wellington Town council seats
The results have been declared in by elections for two Telford & Wrekin Council wards and one seat on Wellington Town Council.
By elections were held on Thursday (Feb 11) for the College Ward of Telford & Wrekin Council and the College Ward of Wellington Town Council and the Nedge Ward of Telford & Wrekin Council.
UKIP to field Telford Candidate
UKIP, will be fielding a candidate at the General Election. The United Kingdom Independence Party has announced councillor Denis Allen is the UKIP prospective parliamentary candidate for the Telford Constituency.
Denis says "The Labour Party promised a referendum on whether the British people wanted to surrender our rights and freedoms to the European Commission and then broke that promise when Gordon Brown sneaked off to Lisbon and signed that surrender document.
Wrekin MP meets David Cameron
Wrekin MP, Mark Pritchard, has met with David Cameron MP, the Leader of the Conservative Party, to discuss the West Midlands economy.
Mr Pritchard said: "The West Midlands is suffering most from unemployment when compared to other parts of the country. It is vital that people are found new employment, education, and training opportunities as quickly as possible. I am glad that David Cameron is committed to the West Midlands and to Shropshire and knows the challenges the County faces".
