Police in Shropshire have warned people to be on their guard against telephone callers claiming to be selling security alarms on behalf of West Mercia Police.

The warning follows several reports where members of the public in the Whitchurch area have reported receiving such calls.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said today: “It would seem these are bogus calls and have nothing to do with the Force. We do not call people offering to sell merchandise.”

Police Constable Karena Evans, the Local Police Officer for Whitchurch, said: “I have been approached by several people with concerns as they have been receiving telephone calls purporting to be from West Mercia Police. They have been led to believe that the caller is from the police and is offering alarms to be filled.

“They are then asked to pay more than £200 for the service. People should be aware that such calls have nothing to do with the police and should not become involved.”
