Bucks storm to Trophy win
AFC Telford United 4-0 Hayes and Yeading United
An oustanding performance from AFC Telford United saw the Bucks ease into the Third Round of the FA Carlsberg Trophy at the expense of Hayes and Yeading at the New Buck's Head. Telford were 2-0 ahead thanks to Andy Brown's double inside the first 12 minutes and the Blue Square South side were never allowed back into the game as second-half goals from Carl Rodgers and Danny Carey-Bertram completed a comprehensive victory, writes Steve Humbles.
Telford - and Brown in particular - made a storming start and Brown should have given Telford the lead after only 6 minutes when he slid the ball wide with only goalkeeper Aaron Howe to beat after Liam Blakeman's defence-splitting pass. However, the former Nuneaton marksman made amends just two minutes later when he turned onto Lee Vaughan's pass and blasted a stunning strike across Howe into the far corner of the net from 25 yards. It got even better for Telford on 12 minutes after a flowing move ended with Brown finding the net for a second time. Vermiglio spread the ball wide to Vaughan in space on the right and, after the wing-back delivered a dangerous cross which was only half-cleared, Brown lashed the ball home with his left foot. Hayes briefly threatened when captain Will Hendry's long-range drive struck the top of the crossbar on 20 minutes, but Telford continued to dominate and Howe made a good save to deny Danny Carey-Bertram in first-half stoppage time.
Four minutes into the second-half, another impressive Telford goal effectively ended the contest as James Meredith broke down the left and delivered a superb cross which Carl Rodgers lashed into the roof of the net on the half-volley. There were loud appeals for a penalty after Blakeman's mazy run into the Hayes' penalty area was ended by a defender's tackle on 65 minutes, but on 69 the Bucks had a deserved fourth as another excellent move involving Moore and Terry Fearns ended with Carey-Bertram sliding the ball past Howe from Fearns' pass. Blakeman nearly notched a deserved goal when his deflected effort was saved on 76 minutes and - after a superb interchange between Moore and Jon Adams on the Bucks' right - Howe got down well to push Adams' fierce strike round his near-post on 81. The visiting goalkeeper continued to be busy, tipping Fearns' header over after Lee Moore's cross on 82 minutes and then blocking Carey-Bertram's shot in stoppage-time following more good work by Blakeman. The only sour note for the injury-ravaged Bucks was the sight of Carl Rodgers being stretchered off in the closing minutes, but little could dampen the enthusiasm of the crowd following this excellent team display.
Telford's reward is a trip to either Tiverton Town or Kettering Town on Saturday 31st January in the Third Round.
