Imposing borough landmark the Wrekin is set to get further support to manage and conserve its natural beauty. A report to Telford & Wrekin Council's cabinet will show that as well being part of the nationally designated Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) an area around the Wrekin, including the Wrekin Forest, will get its own plan. The aim of this will be to help promote conservation and manage the area in a way that will help to enhance its natural beauty and features.

A management plan has been drawn up by the Council and partners, including the Shropshire Wildlife Trust, for the Wrekin, reflecting its unique nature that is different from the other Shropshire Hills in the AONB.

The management plan which covers the Wrekin, and the surrounding Wrekin Forest area is supported by the council and the Wrekin Forest Partnership which was set up to focus on this part of the AONB.

The plan aims to ensure that the landscape is conserved, land is carefully managed and the area is valued for its rich variety of geology, wildlife and heritage.

Michael Barker, the Council's head of planning and environment, said: "This plan will bring together the wider AONB and the Wrekin Forest sites to provide a plan that will help conserve and manage this important and very popular beauty spot.

"By doing so, we hope that, with our partners, we can conserve and enhance this piece of countryside which adds so much to the appeal of the borough and is a much-loved and well-used place for people to go and enjoy an area with a unique heritage, landscape and wildlife."

The report will be considered by Telford & Wrekin Council's cabinet on May 11. The report can be viewed at www.telford.gov.uk/demservices/DisplayDocument.asp?type=doc&ref=11125
