Shrewsbury firework display CANCELLED
The management at Shropshire’s West Mid Showground have revealed they have been 'forced' to cancel the 2009 bonfire and firework spectacular at the last minute. The event was due to take place this weekend marking the close of the bi-centenary year of the birth of Shropshire-born naturalist Charles Darwin. But the society has experienced financial problems amid the recession and the effect of the economic crisis and demands from suppliers means the November 7 event cannot go ahead.
Gary Tudor, commercial director at the society, said: “It is with great regret and sadness that we must announce the cancellation of the Darwin Bonfire and Firework Spectacular which was to take place this Saturday. We have looked at all possible options to continue but unfortunately, due to payments that must be made in an advance of the event, before the sale of tickets on the gate, we have been left with no option but to cancel. I hope that people find an alternative event to attend and enjoy their evening in a safe and organised manner.
“We apologise to anyone who had planned to attend the event and want to reassure everyone that all efforts were made to find a solution before this action was taken.”
Keith Winter, West Mid Agricultural Society treasurer, said: “This situation has come about both due to the cash flow of the society at the current time and the needs of the suppliers connected with the event.
“The suppliers have requested payment in advance of the event and these payments cannot be made without the income from the event itself. It is with great regret that the decision to not go ahead was made.”
A number of displays and activities will be taking place across the county including a fireworks display at Wellington Cricket Club on Saturday. The event will be run in support of three charities : the Wellington Mayor's 2009 Charity, the Telford Lions, Help For Heroes and the Wellington Cricket Club Youth Section.
Gates will open at 5:30pm, with the fireworks display starting at 7:30pm. The usual attractions will again be providing entertainment for the crowd led by the Beacon Radio Roadshow, various funfair rides, stalls and of course the public bar. Hot and cold food will also be available.
Admission prices have been kept as low as possible. Children under the age of three = free entry, U14s = £2 Over 14s (including Adults) = £4 Car parking = FREE. Events are also being held at Weston Park and Blists Hill in Ironbridge.
