Campaign highlights few real truants

Truancy Truancy sweeps carried out during a TWC campaign to improve school attendance showed the borough has few "real" truants - most stay off school with parental blessings. The campaign aims to combat all types of truancy but particularly parents who condone truancy, allowing them to stay off school for reasons like birthdays or family holidays. School Attendance Week rewarded the primary and secondary schools with the most improved percentage attendance from the week of November 10-14 to the week of December 8-12.

A campaign to change the attitudes of revellers who down too many alcoholic drinks has been launched in Telford and Wrekin. The Bar Code campaign, set up by the Safer & Stronger Communities Partnership, was officially unveiled at the opening of The Sank.tuary in Wellington last Friday night. Rolling out posters, branded wristbands and beer mats are a few of the ways the partnership, which includes organisations such as the Primary Care Trust, the Police and the Council, is hoping to raise awareness of sensible, safe drinking.
Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin Prepare for More Visitors

A consultancy has been commissioned to work with the Much Wenlock Legacy Group to help the town prepare for more visitors and to harvest opportunities for Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin in the run up to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Wellington pupil a winner

A ten-year-old's winning Christmas card design will feature on the front of cards from David Wilson Mercia's Old Hall Park development in Wellington, after the youngster won a competition to depict her perfect Christmas at home. Years five and six from Short Wood Primary School in Telford took part and year five pupil, Dana Bott's entry was named top of the pile. Dana's design focused on Christmas as a time where her family get together and enjoy spending time with each other. She drew a humorous Christmas scene at her home, with a roaring fire, Christmas tree and members of her family.
FSA assaults consumer rights

Why is the Financial Services Authority (FSA) focusing on consumer responsibility at a time when large sections of the industry are not giving consumers a fair deal? asks the Financial Services Consumer Panel (FSCP).
This is not the time for the FSA to be debating responsibilities for consumers, says the panel.
Awards for Two Police Officers

Two police officers who rescued a man from the swollen River Severn in Bridgnorth, received life-saving awards from the Royal Humane Society. PC
Simon Holmes and ex sergeant Keith Field were honoured for saving a 40-year-old man who was in danger of being swept away by fast currents.
A certificate of commendation went to PC Holmes for his "praiseworthy action in assisting in saving the man's life on December 9, 2007."
